Annecy with Kids: The French Alps Family Trip That Actually Works

Paragliding from age 3. Two mountain toboggans. The cleanest lake in Europe. And cheese on a baguette that will ruin everything you've eaten before it.

If you are planning an unforgettable vacation to Annecy with kids, you have found the rare destination that balances luxury and high adventure effortlessly. Every family has a trip they keep meaning to take—the one where a Michelin-starred lunch and a mountain toboggan run can comfortably coexist on the same day.

Annecy is that trip.

I recently explored Annecy with kids, traveling with my three children and another family. In total, we were seven people spanning different ages and priorities. However, by day three of our Alpine adventure, nobody wanted to leave.

What follows is our honest guide to visiting Annecy with kids: what we did, where we dined, which hotels worked best, and what activities you must reserve before departing.

Why Visiting Annecy with Kids is Extraordinary

The short version: Annecy is a medieval town featuring winding canals, a 15th-century castle, and the cleanest lake in Europe. Ringed by the Alps and located just 45 minutes from Geneva, it is objectively beautiful. You step out of the car and immediately understand why families flock here.

The longer version: Annecy works because it offers incredible depth. For adults, the food and wine are world-class, featuring multiple Michelin stars nearby. Meanwhile, exploring Annecy with kids gives children access to genuine adventures: paragliding from age 3, mountain toboggan runs, zip lines, and suspended gorge walks.

In addition, the unhurried pace of the region allows families to relax completely. We came for a week, but it simply wasn't enough.

The Lake: Swimming and Water Activities

Lac d'Annecy is 14km long and formed by glacial meltwater. Strict environmental laws have kept its waters exceptionally clean since the 1960s. Consequently, the water turns a brilliant turquoise in good light that looks vibrant both in photographs and in person.

As you stroll through the cobblestone old town, you feel as though you have stepped into a fairy tale. Furthermore, sitting by the shore watching wooden speedboats zip across the crystal-clear water provides pure relaxation.

The primary public beaches—Plage d'Albigny and Plage Impérial—feature attentive lifeguards, paddleboard rentals, and kayaks. Therefore, these beaches serve as the ideal entry point for your first day in Annecy with kids. The lake is so inviting that coaxing children out of the water remains your only real challenge.

Talloires, Plage d'Angon & Quiet Bays

Talloires is located 20 minutes from Annecy by car, or reachable via a scenic lake ferry. Arriving by boat is easily the best approach. The village sits quietly on a sheltered bay and exudes timeless charm.

The Abbaye de Talloires—a 17th-century Benedictine monastery on the water's edge—is now a premier hotel and restaurant. Having lunch on the terrace while gazing across the bay toward the Alps was one of our favorite meals of the trip.

Nearby, Plage Municipale de Talloires is ideal for families traveling to Annecy with kids who love water sports. It features a diving board, a lake slide, floating decks, and two fantastic casual dining spots right on the water.

The hidden beach: Plage d'Angon is a 10-minute walk south of Talloires. The shallow, pristine water is perfect for little ones. In addition, there is a small seaside café and stand-up paddleboard rentals set against dramatic limestone cliffs.

Tip: Drive up to Col de la Forclaz above Talloires for panoramic views of the entire 14km lake. It costs nothing and provides an incredible backdrop for family photos.

Paragliding Above the Lake — From Age 3

Col de la Forclaz is one of Europe's most celebrated paragliding launch sites. Surprisingly, tandem flights start from age 3, making it a highlight for anyone visiting Annecy with kids.

My 8- and 10-year-old children both flew with certified instructors. They were allowed to take the controls, steer, and execute thrilling turns over the water. For parents, it delivers 15 minutes of quiet wonder above one of the world's most beautiful landscapes.

"They were allowed to take the helm and steer, do flips and spins — and found it exhilarating to run off the edge of a mountain and catch the air."

If someone in your group prefers not to fly, watching the launches from the scenic viewpoint is equally entertaining. We rotated taking turns flying while others watched from below.

Book ahead: Morning flight slots fill quickly during July and August. Minimum age is 3 years old.

In summer, La Clusaz transforms into an outdoor paradise. Local Cheese and Valley Drives

On your return journey from La Clusaz, stop in Thônes—the historic birthplace of Reblochon cheese. A tasting at Fromagerie Boujon allows you to sample fresh local cheeses for an authentic Alpine picnic.

Furthermore, the drive through the valley reveals vibrant fields of wild purple lupines and grazing dairy cows. Be sure to pull over at local farm stands for fresh peaches and berries.

Gorge Walks, Zip Lines, and Day Trips

Les Gorges du Fier: Located 15 minutes from town, this dramatic gorge features a suspended footbridge 30 meters above a roaring river. It is an exciting excursion when exploring Annecy with kids. However, note that strollers are prohibited, so children must walk independently.

Chamonix & Aiguille du Midi: Just 75 minutes away, Chamonix sits at the base of Mont Blanc. Taking the cable car up to 3,842 meters provides breathtaking views across three countries. Consequently, it is a day trip your family will remember forever.
